ADAGIO MESTO is the second half of the Sextet in Three Movements for brass quintet and piano by the brothers Francisco José and Andrés Valero-Castells. It was commissioned by the Iberbrass brass quintet, who, together with Andrés Valero-Castells on piano, premiered it at the IX COSICOVA Composers Conference, on 18 January 1998, in Valencia’s Palau de la Música (Palace of Music) Rodrigo Hall. Subsequently, the quintet Spanish Brass recorded it on two CDs, together with the pianist and composer Albert Guinovart, and later with Andrés Valero-Castells on piano.
From the second half of the sextet they arranged a version for saxophone quintet and piano, premiered and recorded by the Púrpura Pansa ensemble and Andrés Valero-Castells at the piano.
Finally, the present version for clarinet quintet and piano was premiered on 23 July 2021, within the Festival Xacobeo Clarinet Fest, held in Lalín (Galicia), by the festival’s clarinet ensemble and Andrés Valero-Castells at the piano.
