QUARTET Nº 2

The original version of this piece (2001-AV41) was commissioned by Manuel Miján for his saxophone quartet.

The work is structured in four movements. In the first, “Mmmmi”, the entire piece revolves around the note of E, since two modes derived from the circle of fifths are used, ascending and descending from this sound. The second movement, “Pentafona” is written with only five sounds, corresponding to the 5th mode on an E flat tonic. The third movement, “For Lisa”, pays homage to the saxophonist and brilliant animated character Lisa Simpson with a quote from the theme of the popular TV series. The last movement, “Provisional Summary”, only brings a new idea with respect to the work, and as its name indicates, summarises, reworks and mixes the material explored in the previous movements.

The clarinet quartet shall consist of two clarinets in B flat one alto clarinet in E flat (or basset horn in F), and one bass clarinet in B flat.
