Orihime (Princess Weaver) was the daughter of Tentei (Heavenly King). Orihime wove splendid cloth on the banks of the river Amanogawa (the Milky Way). Her father loved her weavings, and she worked hard every day to have them ready. But one thing troubled the princess: because of her work she could never meet anyone with whom to fall in love. Worried about his daughter, Tentei arranged a meeting between her and Hikoboshi (the Star Shepherd), who lived on the other side of the Amanogawa River. When the two met, they instantly fell in love with each other, and soon after they were married. However, once they were married Orihime neglected her chores and stopped weaving for Tentei, while Hikoboshi neglected his flock and let the stars scatter across the sky. Furious, Tentei separated the lovers, one on each side of the Amanogawa, forbidding them to see each other. Orihime felt the loss of her husband, and asked her father if they could see each other once more. Tentei, moved by his daughter’s tears, allowed the lovers to see each other on the seventh day of the seventh month, provided Orihime had finished her work. However, the first time they tried to see each other they found that they could not cross the river, as there was no bridge. Orihime cried so much that a flock of magpies came to her aid, promising to make a bridge of their wings so she could cross the river. If one year it rains on that day, the magpies cannot come and the two lovers must wait until the following year.
