The Poema Gasteiztarra is a free-form work that alternates between contrasting sections and draws on other music, like so many other compositions throughout the history of music.
The work is based on various musical themes representative of different festivities in the city of Vitoria-Gasteiz. The main theme that recurs throughout the work, like a common thread, comes from the popular Vitorian pasacalle Celedón. Different motifs and compositional elements are extracted, reworked, deconstructed and decontextualised from this piece, giving the new composition a renewed aesthetic.
Without any artistic pretensions beyond pure musical enjoyment, the work is designed to be direct and accessible to the listener. To this end, it draws on the numerous technical, expressive and evocative possibilities of today's symphonic band as a high-level artistic ensemble.
The work was commissioned by Celedones de Oro/Urrezko Zeledonen enkarguz egindako lana. The world premiere took place at the Teatro Principal Antzokia in Vitoria-Gasteiz on 18 September 2022, performed by the Vitoria-Gasteizko Udal Musika Banda - Banda Municipal de Vitoria-Gasteiz, conducted by Luis Orduña.
